How Does Sponsorship Work in Canada?

The Government of Canada offers sponsorship programs to both permanent residents and Canadian citizens looking to bring their family to Canada. Sponsorship is one of many options if you plan to:

Bring loved ones to stay in Canada permanently.

Apply for citizenship sometime in the future.

Build a life together with your family in Canada.

Sponsor Eligibility

  • Canadian citizenship or permanent resident 
  • Be at least 18 years old 
  • Live in Canada or plan to live in Canada while sponsoring family
  • Demonstrate you can financially support sponsored family for three years
  • Have no criminal record or convictions for a violent crime
  • No past record of failed sponsorships

Sponsee

Eligibility

  • Be a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner over the age of 18
  • Be an unmarried dependent child under the age of 22 who relies on their parents for financial support
  • For married individuals: Have a marriage that’s legally-recognized in both Canada and the country where the marriage was performed
  • For common-law relationships: Live or lived with your common-law partner for at least 12 consecutive months
  • For conjugal relationships: Live outside of Canada while in a relationship with the sponsor for at least one year and demonstrate a significant degree of attachment

Get set up with a personal portal to complete easy to understand questionnaires, upload supporting documents, and watch your progress.

Step 4 > Production

Our team goes to work building your application. We are in contact with you throughout this entire process. 

Step 5 > Review

Your complete application will come to you for review and signatures. After your review, we perform a rigorous internal review to ensure perfection! 

Step 6 > Submission

Your application is submitted to IRCC. We immediately send you a confirmation of submission, summary of current government processing times, and we set up an IRCC portal tracker so you can watch your application throughout processing.

Step 7 > Government Processing

Additional requests for biometrics, medicals, and more may be requested from IRCC as your application makes its way through their processing. We communicate this with you immediately and provide detailed instructions. 

Step 8 > Decision

You are immediately contacted when IRCC updates your case. We are there to walk you through the next steps and always look forward to celebrating with you!
